New Zealand's West Coast is a beautiful part of the South Island.
Reefton, the town of lights, is nestled in the heartland of South Island's lush West Coast area in the valley of the Inangahua River. Called the town of lights after being the first town in the Southern Hemisphere to have public supply of electricity and street lighting, Reefton is proud of its pioneering history. The 1860s Reefton goldrush formed and has become the backdrop of Reefton's charm and character.
Steeped in gold and coal mining history, Reefton offers Museums, 1900s olde worlde high street charm, rich heritage expeditions, tours of historic gold and coal mining sites, gold panning opportunities, history in action at the Reefton i-Site and a rich train and rail heritage.
Book a tour or pick up a walking brochure from the Reefton Visitor Centre and immerse yourself in times gone by. Other historic attractions include Black Point's Museum, Bev's Doll and Toy Museum, Reefton School of Mines and the Old Miner's Hut, complete with bearded hosts.
Take the time to visit the 'Bearded Miners' as their knowledge about the gold found in the surrounding areas and other gems throughout New Zealand is very informative; they're passionate about their subject.
There's a replica miner's hut set up on site so you can picture for yourself what it would have been like living in one, not that long ago. If the billy's boiling, you might even get a cup of tea - ask about the rope trick and see if you can get the ring off the chained horse shoes.
Reefton and the Goldfields of Quartzopolis is the brainchild of the Reefton Community and the Department of Conservation. They have isolated what they believe to be ten of the best adventure activities and expeditions into the Victoria Forest Park (which is New Zealand's largest forest park).
Forests don't come much lusher or greener than the beautiful native West Coast forests that surround Reefton. Walks for all fitness abilities and ages are numerous, often following old gold and coal mining tram tracks. Consequently there are lots of discoveries to be made of remnants from the mines.
The mountain biking through these native forests is sublime too. The wonderland of differing environs and fresh air will have you whooping with glad to be alive delight.
Other activites include classic 4WD adventures, from guided tours to maiden outings to those with greater experience. The biodiversity around Reefton is home to rare and interesting birds, so try your luck with wildlife and flora spotting.
If you want to catch and eat some of the wildlife you spot, hunting and fishing opportunities are readily accessible. Reefton Golf Course is a 12 hole, par 72 course with tree lined fairways and chuckling creeks, sheltered among the hills.
The Reefton Skatepark is highly revered and certainly is one of the biggest and best in New Zealand, so be sure to pack the kids's bikes, scooters, rollerblades or skateboards. There's even a covered swimming pool or try one of the swimming holes in the local river.
Come and relax or be as active as you like!
