Gisborne, Eastland the first city in New Zealand to see the sun

Being the first city daily to see the break of day, Gisborne is a seaside town on the East of New Zealand's North Island. Away from the hustle and bustle of big city life, Gisborne is the perfect place to relax and play.

The beaches range from surfing beaches to white sandy swimming beaches and there are expanses of natural coastline waiting to be explored. Wainui Beach is an idyllic place to watch the stunning golden sunrise as the sun heralds a brand new day.

Rere Rock Slide is Gisborne's natural rock slide which whoops down 60m of water smoothed rock. Try sliding down on a boogie board or an inflated inner tube. The Rere waterfall is worth exploring too. Take a picnic and spend a great day splashing around enjoying nature's playground.

Lake Waikaremoana track in Te Urewera National Park is a four day walk and one of New Zealand's ten great walks. Walk through untouched native forest amid magnificent scenery, wrapped in fascinating Maori history, marvelling at the geology and the beauty of the rainforest. There are tour companies who ensure a comfortable night's stay, great food and wine and transfers of baggage.

Eastwood Hill Arboretum is a Garden of National Significance. Meandering through the 100 hectares of hills and valleys easy walkways lead past New Zealand's largest collection of Northern Hemisphere shrubs and trees. This is a major tourist attraction in the region. There are many beautiful, interesting and family-friendly gardens and parks in Eastland.

Want to soak in natural mineral hot pools in a natural rainforest environment? Then head for Morere Hot Springs. Contained in a modern complex you are offered the choice of a hot, cold, indoor, outdoor, private or public pools. Adventures in the water is a great way experience Gisborne. Go deep sea diving or fishing off the Gisborne coast or feed the stingray. If that sounds tame then book in with a shark cage experience. Try snorkelling in the beautiful Te Tapuwae Rongokako Marine Reserve.
